Happy Birthday to Benjamin Franklin (born January 17, 1706), the father of the American fire service! Founded in Philadelphia in 1736, the Union Fire Company was the first formally organized volunteer fire company in the American colonies and was established with the help of Benjamin Franklin after he advocated for organized fire protection in the Pennsylvania Gazette. Unlike earlier fire societies that focused mainly on protecting members’ property, the Union Fire Company committed to responding to fires anywhere in the community, with members supplying their own equipment such as leather buckets and salvage bags. The company operated under written articles of agreement, enforced attendance and equipment standards, and helped set the foundation for the organized volunteer fire service model that later influenced municipal fire departments across the United States. ... On Thursday January 15th, 4 members of the Purcellville Volunteer Fire Company graduated from the Fall/Winter LCCFR Fire/EMT Recruit school. Purcellville Volunteer Fire Company is extremely proud and congratulate them on their accomplishment juggling the demands of work or high school, but also the Fire/EMT school as well.These members who completed Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), in addition to their full-time jobs, schooling and family obligations have dedicated countless hours throughout their training and have acquired Loudoun County, Virginia Office of OEMS and National Certifications!Firefighter/EMT Charles Fridrich IVFirefighter/EMT Barrie Walker (not pictured as she just left for the US Coast Guard) EMT Mattea DiekenEMT Christopher DiekenAlso, congratulations to Charles and Barrie as they completed Fire School in June 2025 and are now certified as a full Firefighter/EMT.
